Confirmation

Confirmation is a "mature public affirmation" of one's Christian faith and an informed, conscious "commitment to the responsibilities of Baptism." In Confirmation, a person receives the laying on of hands by a Bishop. An assumption underlying Confirmation is that many people are baptized when they are infants, and are therefore unable at the time of Baptism to make their own, conscious commitment to Christian faith and life and to the Baptismal Covenant. Therefore, it makes sense for people to have an opportunity to publicly commit to the responsibilities of Baptism when they are old enough to make such a decision for themselves. Reception is for those who have already made a mature public affirmation of Christian faith (been confirmed) in another denomination and desire to be officially received into the Episcopal Church. People who have been already confirmed or received into the Episcopal Church may desire to make a statement of renewal regarding their faith with a Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows. The minimum age for confirmation is 7th grade. Preparation is required for both youth and adults before a person can go before the Bishop. |
