The oldest of four children, Odie grew up in Seaford, Long Island, New York. He graduated with a B.A. in Psychology from Hobart College in 1971; a M.Div.from the General Theological Seminary in 1975; and a Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) in Psychotherapy from the Andover Newton Theological School in 1996. He was ordained as a priest in 1975.
Odie formerly served as Chaplain at the University of Vermont, Curate and Priest-in-Charge at Christ Church, Ridgewood, New Jersey, and Rector at All Saints, Oakville, Connecticut. In 1980 he also founded the Waterbury Pastoral Counseling Center in Connecticut. As a Fellow in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors since 1982 he still conducts a small psychotherapy practice about 5 hours per week.
Since 1986, Odie has been Rector at CGS and has been excited to be part of such a vital and vibrant parish that has gone from 350 households to over 500 households. Shortly after arriving, he was one of the co-founders of the Nashua Pastoral Care Center, the official outreach arm of CGS and was president of its Board of Directors for six years and treasurer since 1993. Odie has also served on numerous Diocesan Committees over the years, most recently on the Bishop’s Search Committee and the Response Team for Congregations in Crisis.
Although he was divorced in 1988, Odie and his former wife, Kim, have cooperatively raised three wonderful, happy and active children. Their son Jimmy is married, a high school math teacher and the head soccer coach at Newbury College; daughter Jennifer has a Masters in Dance Therapy, working with autistic children; and daughter Becky is working on her Masters to become a History teacher.
On December 22, 2001 at CGS, Odie was married to Heidi Holden. A native of Hudson, NH, Heidi worked as an Orthodontic Assistant in Nashua for 20 years. She is now a physician assistant for Dartmouth-Hitchcock and Southern NH Medical Center. They own their own home in Salem. Odie is a die-hard New York fan (especially the Yankees!) and enjoys golf, squash, downhill skiing and water skiing. Odie also referees college and high school soccer and umpires high school baseball and softball.
The Rev. Alanna M. Van Antwerpen, Assistant Rector
Born in Danbury, CT, Alanna is the youngest of seven children. Her family moved to Hingham, MA when she was five and she spent the greater part of her childhood there. After graduation from St. Anselm College with a BA in Philosophy, Alanna was a Jesuit Volunteer (comparable to a domestic Peace Corps program) in Santa Rosa, CA at a family homeless shelter. She then served as a staff member of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps in the Southwest ministering with young adults and doing fund raising and development. Alanna worked in hospital fund raising at the California Pacific Medical Center and University Ministry at the University of San Francisco.
Alanna earned her Master of Divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley and a Certificate in Anglican Studies from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific. Since graduation, she served as Children, Youth and Family Ministry Coordinator and Church Administrator at Holy Innocents Episcopal Church in San Francisco. As part of her vocational formation she interned at Phoebe Home (a skilled nursing facility) in Allenstown, PA for her Clinical Pastoral Education.
On July 1, 2010 Alanna was ordained a Deacon by Bishop V. Gene Robinson on behalf of Bishop Marc Andrus of the Diocese of California. God willing and the People consenting, she will be ordained to the priesthood at the Church of the Good Shepherd on the Feast of the Epiphany, January 6, 2011.
Both native easterners, Alanna and her husband Franklin recently moved to Nashua from the San Francisco bay area with their baby daughter. While out west the family was part of "Red Sox Nation" and is happy to be back in the land of the Fenway and the Green Monster. Alanna enjoys being outdoors, running, hiking, camping, as well as museums, concerts and cooking. It is a blessing to be serving alongside the people of Good Shepherd as well as Pastors Odie and Charles.
