What is a Christian?

A Christian is somebody who believes in God and seeks a relationship with God specifically through Jesus Christ. Christians believe that God placed Jesus on earth more than 2000 years ago and that he died and rose from the dead to sit at the right hand of God. It is that belief in the risen Christ that makes us Christians.  However, being a Christian is not simply a matter of intellectual assent to a set of beliefs.

How did Christianity begin?

The religion of "Christianity" is established on the life, work, death, and resurrection of a man named "Jesus of Nazareth," as the story is told in four books of the Christian Bible, known as the "Gospels" (which means "Good News"). The Gospels are typically referred to by the names of the people traditionally believed to be their authors: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

What was Jesus’ main teaching?

Jesus summed up his own teaching in the words, "Love God with all your heart, all your mind, and all your strength, and love your neighbor as yourself."  Jesus' message, which we continue to proclaim today, is that God loves all people more than we can possibly imagine, and seeks to be in meaningful relationship with us.

What is a church and what is its purpose?

The word "Church" is often used to refer to a building where Christian worship takes place.  However, this is not quite what the word means.  The Church is actually the community of people gathered together for prayer, worship, fellowship, and ministry.

What is the Episcopal Church?

The Episcopal Church is a member of the worldwide Anglican Communion, the churches around the world that trace their roots to the Church of England, and maintain a "communion" with it, hence the name "Anglican." Other members of the Communion include the Anglican Church of Canada and the Anglican Church of Nigeria. In fact, most Anglicans now live in Africa.

While there are other churches that call themselves "Anglican," only one Church in any country can be considered "in full communion" with the Church of England, and the Episcopal Church is the American member of the Communion.

What is the purpose and vision of Church of the Good Shepherd?

O God, who created all peoples in your image, we thank you for the wonderful diversity of races and cultures in this world. Enrich our lives by ever-widening circles of fellowship, and show us your presence in those who differ most from us, until our knowledge of your love is made perfect in our love for all your children; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

How does one become involved in ministry?

In the Episcopal Church, all members are considered ministers with a calling to deliver the good news of Christ's resurrection. There are many ways that each of us can express that calling. There are various organizations for members.
